Phish Fraud

This webpage demonstrates brand spoofing fraud in email. This is email (viewed in WebMail) that appears to come from eBay (#2), asking for personal account information. It even displays eBay's registered trademark!

There are several red flags:

  • It is unsolicited email, asking for private information, which should always make you suspicious.
  • It is addressed to a Listserv list (#1). It makes no sense for a group on a list to have an eBay account.
  • In the actual email, if you were to slide your mouse over the "ebay...fraudcheck" URL (#3), the link wouldn't have gone to eBay at all!
