Step 4 - Clear Browser History

Clear browser history and delete temporary files on your computer.

This will decrease the time for scanning and the number of "false positives," that is, you will receive fewer erroneous reports of numbers that appear to be—but are not—SSNs, payment card numbers or driver’s license numbers.

To delete temporary files in Internet Explorer 7.x, 6.x or 5.x:

  • Open INTERNET EXPLORER.
  • Select the TOOLS menu and then click INTERNET OPTIONS.
  • Select the GENERAL tab.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click DELETE FILES or DELETE BROWSING HISTORY.

To delete temporary files in Internet Explorer 4.x:

  • Open INTERNET EXPLORER.
  • Select the View menu and click INTERNET OPTIONS.
  • Select the GENERAL tab.
  • In the middle of this page is the Temporary Internet Files section.
  • Click the DELETE FILES button.
  • You will then be prompted by the dialog box, Delete files.
  • In this dialog box you are asked if you wish to DELETE all files in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
  • Click OK.

To delete temporary files in Netscape 4.x, 6.x and 7.x:

  • Open NETSCAPE.
  • Select the EDIT menu and then click PREFERENCES.
  • Select ADVANCED from the category listing.
  • Select CACHE.
  • Click the CLEAR CACHE button, then the CLEAR MEMORY CACHE.
  • Click OK.
  • For Netscape 4.x, click the CLEAR MEMORY CACHE button.

To delete temporary files in Safari:

  • Open SAFARI.
  • Select the SAFARI menu and then click PREFERENCES.
  • Select AUTOFILL from the top toolbar.
  • Click the EDIT button next to OTHER FORMS.
  • Click the REMOVE ALL button.
  • Remove the check from the OTHER FORMS box.

To delete temporary files in Mozilla:

  • Open MOZILLA.
  • Select the TOOLS menu and then click PRIVACY.
  • Click the CLEAR button.

To delete temporary files in Opera:

  • Open OPERA.
  • Select the PREFERENCES menu and then click CACHE.
  • Click the EMPTY NOW button.
