Step 7 - Find the Log File

Locate the log file on your desktop.

The log displays a list of files that may contain sensitive data. The first item on each line is the path, or the location, of the file. Following the path are the criteria Spider used to determine whether the data were SSNs, payment card numbers or driver’s license numbers. There may be more than one search criterion listed.

You may find a higher incidence of false positives in files Spider identifies as having driver’s license numbers. Each time you run the Spider program the existing log file is overwritten by the new log file.

For Windows:

  • If you’ve closed the application, click Windows Start > Programs (All Programs for Vista)> Spider3 > spider_3.0.exe. The Spider window will open. If the application is already open, the log automatically loads and you can continue to the next step.
  • Click File > Launch Log Viewer. The Log Viewer will open.
  • Click Options > Load Log.
  • Browse to locate the spider.log file. The default location is on your desktop.
  • Double click on spider.log to view.
  • If an error message appears, hit Continue.

For Macintosh:

  • The default location for the Spider log (spider.log) is on your desktop.
  • Double click on spider.log to view.

For Unix:

  • Find and open the /tmp/spider.log.
